Twitch Co-Founder Emmett Shear Steps Down as CEO

After 16 years as a key player in the popular entertainment platform Twitch, company co-founder Emmett Shear has stepped down from his role as CEO. Shear was at the beginning when the streaming platform was known as Justin.tv, and he was part of the team that helped transition it into the world-famous Twitch. 

With Amazon's acquisition of the company in 2014, Shear was the key figure in leading the company through the transition and beyond. Now, his decision to step down is driven by his desire to be there for his family and newly born son.

Shear was there when Justin.tv was just a live video site designed to document the life of co-founder Justin Kan. As the platform grew, Twitch was born as a spin-off of the gaming category. Shear was instrumental in the growth of this new venture and in the eventual sale of the company to Amazon in 2014. Through his leadership, Twitch has grown to become a global leader in streaming and digital entertainment.

Shear announced his decision to step down in a farewell blog, citing his need to focus on his family. He explained that "I want to be fully there for my son as he enters this world" and that his decision to step down was rooted in that desire. While Shear is leaving his role as CEO, he will continue to work at Twitch in an advisory role.
