OnePlus has made an exciting announcement regarding the launch of their latest flagship device. Today marks the official introduction of the OnePlus 13, which is accompanied by another model yet to be revealed, positioned just below the OnePlus 13 in their product range. I had the chance to experience the OnePlus 13 firsthand last November at a preview event held at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam.
The event highlighted several key advancements featured in the new smartphone, particularly in its camera capabilities. The device now benefits from AI-powered enhancements across all three camera sensors. Furthermore, there has been a significant upgrade to the battery capacity, increasing from 5,400 mAh in the previous model to an impressive 6,000 mAh. The phone also boasts an enhanced IP rating and includes a new energy-efficient processor known as the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Notably, the display has achieved Displaymate's prestigious A++ rating, which praised it as a top-tier smartphone screen with exceptional calibration accuracy.
At the gathering, I was presented with the opportunity to test some of the innovative camera features incorporated in the OnePlus 13. One standout addition is the AI Reflection Eraser, which effectively eliminates unwanted reflections with the aid of cloud connectivity. I experimented with this new mode while photographing various OnePlus products displayed behind glass. The tool managed to subtly and effectively clear most reflections, resulting in sharper images and significantly enhancing what would typically be less desirable shots.
Another exciting functionality is the improved burst shooting capability, referred to by OnePlus as Clear Burst. I had numerous opportunities to put these enhancements to the test. There were two breakdancers performing impressive moves at the venue, giving me the chance to capture several images by holding down the shutter button to engage burst mode. While the main camera produced a series of sharp pictures, the 3x zoom camera struggled to keep pace. I also captured dynamic shots of a racing bike's spinning rear wheel, yielding clear images despite the motion.
According to OnePlus, there have also been enhancements to the portrait modes offered by the camera. The three rear sensors have been fine-tuned to replicate the distinct portrait styles associated with various Hasselblad cameras. I conducted some test shots using these modes, including selfies. The camera also showcased impressive zoom capabilities beyond 10x, employing AI technology. I tested this feature by zooming in 120x on images positioned on the ceiling, and the results were impressive up to a certain extent, with AI effectively enhancing details. However, at the maximum 120x zoom, the details became somewhat distorted as the AI resorted to guessing the elements of the image.
After the event, I took a OnePlus 13 home for further exploration, and detailed impressions and evaluations of the device can be found in my upcoming OnePlus 13 review.
